Course Information

This course is geared for the crane operator and the supervisory personnel responsible for the daily operation and safe performance of cranes. The course covers major crane components, safe operating practices, daily checklists, communications, operator inspections per OSHA, documentation requirements, and hands on demonstrations. Each participant will have the opportunity to perform an actual pre-operation inspection that is required by OSHA.

Each participant will also receive a comprehensive course workbook. This provides participants with a valuable source for future reference. The working knowledge participants acquire from this course will greatly reduce downtime and possible serious injury to personnel caused by improper crane operation.

After attending this course, participants will be able to:.

  • Identify and explain the function of all major crane components and assemblies
  • Define the minimum qualifications and requirements of a crane operator
  • Perform and document the daily crane inspection procedure required by OSHA
  • Understand the four rules of safe and proficient crane operation
  • Perform precise spotting of loads and make precision lifts
  • Become familiar with the proper techniques to minimize load swing
  • Explain and practice all recommended hand signals
  • Understand the basic rigging procedures to attach a load to the hook
  • Understand the requirements of crane operators per OSHA 1910.179

This course is completed in eight hours of instruction for a maximum of 10 operators.

As an option, actual hand on crane operation one-on-one with the instructor is available. Additional time is required for this service.

Each Crane Pro Services Crane Operator Instructor is certified by the Konecranes Training Center. Each instructor must pass a curriculum of Train-The-Trainer and demonstrate classroom proficiency under the guidance of a Master Instructor to become certified. Only certified instructors are allowed to perform customer training.

The course workbook that is personalized by each participant contains:

  • OSHA 1910.179(N) - "Handling the Load"
  • OSHA 1910.179 "Overhead & Gantry Cranes" / Excerpts ANSI B30.2
  • Crane Operator Test

After successful completion of the course and testing, all students will receive a Certificate of Completion. Students are also asked to complete an evaluation critique of the course content and instruction. A copy of the evaluation sheets, certificates and instructor's comments will be forwarded to the customer after completion of the crane operator training.


Course Outline

1) What is a Crane?
- Identify all major components of a crane, gantry, jib, etc.
- Explain the function of all major assemblies and components

2) Crane Operator Qualifications
- Minimum legal requirements

3) Know the cranes you operate
- Identify the types of cranes found in your plant
- Discuss the features that are found on your cranes and their operating characteristics

4) Practical instruction at a crane; conducting a daily operator inspection
- emergency stop operation, disconnects
- hook block, hook, rope inspection (Video - Safe Rigging - 20 minutes)
- upper limit check
- crane control operation
- locating and identifying the crane runway disconnect

5) Safe and productive lifting techniques - hoist, trolley bridge
- Video - "Overhead Cranes Safe Operation" - 18 minutes
- The Four Rules of a Safe and Efficient Crane Operator
- Hoist - slack out of ropes / no side pulling / hoist brakes / jogging
- Trolley - positioning / judging drift / load swing
- Bridge - judging drift / load swing / positioning
- Safe Rigging
- Video - "Selection & Care of Rigging Equipment" - 16 minutes
